Jr Senators 2-2 following home-ice victory against Cornwall

Ottawa 3 – Cornwall 1

The Ottawa Jr Senators are back to a .500 record following a 3-1 midweek victory on home ice against the Cornwall Colts. The victory was all the sweeter because the team managed to bounce back after Sunday’s 8-3 loss against the Nepean Raiders.

The Jr Sens got on the board 12 minutes into the first, thanks to a spectacular backhand shot from Wynston Iserhoff, who is tied for the team lead in points with three in the team’s first four games.

During a three-on-two rush, the 20-year-old tried a move to get around Cornwall defenseman Daniel Diakite but got knocked off the puck. Keeping his poise, Iserhoff quickly recovered the puck, moved it to his backhand, and roofed it on Cornwall goaltender Gabriel Poitras. The goal also counted for goalie Josh Scully’s second assist of the season.

Heading into intermission with the scoreboard reading 1-0 Ottawa, OJS Head Coach Mark Grady was satisfied with the score but wanted his squad to tighten up their play in the defensive zone. OJS did exactly that, limiting the Colts to just three shots on goal in the second frame.

The second period began with both teams trading scoring chances until a faceoff to the right of Poitras. Clément Valette won the draw back to defenseman Antoine Poirier, who quickly moved it to the half-wall for Eric Kane. As part of a crisp tic-tac-toe sequence, Kane quickly moved the puck onto the stick of Henry Brady, who buried it in the back of the net on the one-timer from the slot.

Cornwall was in a hurry to get back into the game in the third period. They came out of their locker room on the penalty kill but kept the Jr Sens under pressure in their own zone, forcing Scully to make a few amazing saves.

With three minutes left in the game, Cornwall finally solved Scully. With Poitras on the bench and an extra attacker on the ice, Adam Walker sent a puck on net that bounced off Scully’s pad into the slot, right in front of an open Lyndon Lamb, who scored his first goal of the year to cut Ottawa’s lead in half.

After the next faceoff, Poitras wasted no time getting back to his bench. Ottawa denfenceman Owen Traynor quickly recognized that after the puck found itself on his stick before being sent 100 feet into the net, icing the game 3-1. Ottawa outshot Cornwall 35-23 during Wednesday’s game.

The Jr. Sens will be back in action Saturday at 7:30 for a date with the Brockville Braves, who are tied third in the CCHL with a 3-0-1 record.
