Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa Jr. Senators are pleased to announce the signing of goaltender Rorke Applebee, who spent last season with Portsmouth Abbey Prep School (Portsmouth, RI) of the USHS Prep League.
The 6’0, 170 lbs Châteauguay, Québec native posted a 2.59 GAA and .930 save percentage during the 2021-2022 campaign.
“I had been in the States for the past two years and wanted to play my junior hockey closer to home,” said Applebee. “OJS seemed like the ideal organization to play for as their winning culture and developmental ability is exactly what I am looking for.”
Applebee comes back north of the border to tend the twine for the three-time reigning CCHL champion, with the starter’s crease wide open following the departure of William Desmarais and Collin MacKenzie. OJS has been a hotbed for goalies with the netminders taking home each of the last three playoff MVP awards (Conor Hicks, Francis Boisvert, William Desmarais).
“I am a fast goalie and I use my skating and reflexes to keep the puck out of the net,” added Applebee. “I love the big moments of the game such as breakaways or overtime and I don’t think there’s a better feeling than winning a hard-fought game. I hope to bring competitiveness and reliability to the team that will give us as much success as possible.”
As the netminder settles in the Nation’s Capital, the premier student-athlete also stars in lacrosse. Applebee showed his leadership to the whole student body by being part of the Prefects program and being the captain of the Billings Hockey Program in 2019 and hopes to use OJS as a stepping stone to further his hockey journey.
“My short-term goals for hockey are to have a great season as a team and continue the success this program knows so well,” explained Applebee. “I also plan to be the best goalie in the league. My long-term goals are to pursue my athletic and academic career at the highest level, whether it is NCAA or USports.”
