OTTAWA- Head Coach and General Manager Martin Dagenais is proud to announce that forward Charles-Antoine Girard has committed to the Ottawa Jr. Senators for the 2020-21 season. The Val d’Or, Québec native finished with an impressive 26 goals and 30 assists for a total of 56 points in only 34 games, good for fourth overall in scoring in the Quebec Collegiate League.
Girard is excited to be coming to the nation’s capital: “I came to Ottawa in January to practice with the team, and right away, I knew that this would be a great spot for me. The players and coaches were very welcoming. I really think that playing for the Junior Senators will be the best thing for my development.”
For his part, Dagenais believes that Girard will be a player that people will come to appreciate after they see him play a few games.
“I believe Charles-Antoine is the type of player who becomes better every time you lay eyes on him. He’s a big body that isn’t afraid to drive the net. He also competes in all three zones. His head coach at the Collegiate level only had good things to say about him so we are convinced that he can be an impact player at our level.”
Girard also thinks he can bring a physical element to the Junior Senators. “I know what type of player I am, and I know how I can be effective on the ice. I don’t mind throwing my body around in order to create time and space for myself. I think I can come to Ottawa and produce, but at the same time, I understand the importance of being sound defensively.”
For now, the 19-year-old winger is focused on improving his skating and hopes to one day play at the NCAA or U Sports level.

Ottawa – L’entraîneur-chef et gérant des Sénateurs, Martin Dagenais, est fier d’annoncer que Charles-Antoine Girard, un attaquant des Cougars de Lennoxville, s’alignera avec l’équipe la saison prochaine. Originaire de Val d’Or, Girard a marqué 26 buts et récolté 30 mentions d’aide pour un total de 56 points en seulement 34 parties la saison dernière au niveau Collégial AAA.
“Après avoir pratiqué à deux occasions avec l’équipe lors du mois de février, j’ai pris ma décision que c’est ici que je voulais jouer, a mentionné Girard. J’ai vraiment aimé rencontrer les joueurs ainsi que le groupe d’entraîneurs. Je pense vraiment que jouer à Ottawa sera la meilleure chose pour mon développement.”
De son côté, Dagenais admet que les gens devront regarder jouer Girard quelques matches avant de le juger. Selon lui, c’est un joueur qu’on vient à apprécier avec le temps.
“Je pense que Charles-Antoine est le genre de joueur que l’on apprend à aimer après l’avoir vu à l’oeuvre à quelques occasions. Il a un gros gabarit et nous aimons la façon dont il attaque le filet adverse. Il est aussi très responsable défensivement. Son entraîneur-chef au niveau collégial n’avait que de bonnes choses à dire sur lui, donc ça promet pour la saison prochaine.”
Girard est du même avis. Il croit pouvoir utiliser son gabarit pour devenir un jouer d’impact dans la CCHL.
“Je suis un gars physique qui aime utiliser son gabarit, mais je pense aussi pouvoir aider en jouant de la bonne façon dans les deux sens de la patinoire.”
À court terme, Girard estime qu’il devra améliorer son coup de patin afin de pouvoir se démarquer dans une ligue où la vitesse règne. Comme plusieurs joueurs qui passent par la CCHL, son but à long terme est d’obtenir une bourse d’étude à une université américaine ou canadienne.
