OJS cruises to Game 2 victory over Bears

Smiths Falls, ON – The Ottawa Jr. Senators (43-8-4) took on the Smiths Falls bears (25-25-5) in game two of the Bogart Cup Quarter-Final series. Ottawa took game one 6-1 and in game two it was the same exact story, with OJS taking it 8-0. 

Ottawa would run into some penalty trouble to start the first period, but Ottawa kept dominating Smiths Falls on the penalty kill. Philippe Jacques got the scoring started with 15:03 left in the first frame by scoring his first of the playoffs. After that goal, Bodie Nobes would score Ottawa’s second shorthanded goal of the night. Jake Code would add a power-play marker late in the first. 

OJS continued the dominance heading into the second period. After lots of offensive zone time to start the second, Vincent Velocci would add to Ottawa’s lead by scoring in back-to-back games. Braxton Ross would make it 5-0 Ottawa by scoring his first playoff goal. 

Ottawa didn’t stop playing after the second period. The pressure kept coming from OJS at the early stages of the third, where Velocci would score his second of the night. Late in the third period, Gentile would score Ottawa’s third shorthanded goal and Velocci added another power-play goal to cap off his first career playoff hat trick. 

Will Desmarais made 24 saves for his first career CCHL shutout in the playoffs, while Bears starter Will McEvoy turned aside 28 of 33 before getting pulled for the second straight night. Dalton McBride made 15 saves of 28 shots in 23:47 in game two. 

Ottawa outshot Smiths Falls 51-24. Ottawa’s three shorthanded goals tie a playoff record for most shorthanded goals in a single playoff game. The last time Ottawa scored three shorthanded goals in the playoffs was on March 10th, 2002 vs Cumberland. 

Vincent Velocci had four points in the win, Murphy had three assists and Jacques added 1G/1A. Thirteen different players got on the score sheet in the win for Ottawa. Ottawa’s power play went 2-for-6 while Smiths Falls went 0-for-6. Ottawa leads the series 2-0.
