Jr. Senators win hard fought battle against the Hawkesbury Hawks

By Matt Wilson

Hawkesbury, ON – The Ottawa Jr. Senators traveled to Hawkesbury on Saturday night and came home with a massive 3-2 win over the Hawks thanks to a late 3rd Period goal from captain Owen Cole.

The stories of the evening for Ottawa were the play of goaltender Bryan Landsberger and captain Owen Cole scoring his 2nd goal in as many games since returning to the lineup from a lengthy leg injury.

The first period opened with a bang as Julien Recine was able to find the back of the net off of a great feed from David Berube to give the Jr. Senators the lead early on, Hawksbury battled back with two quick goals but Oswego State commit Conor Smart scored his 2nd goal in as many games to tie the game up at two heading into the 1st intermission.

The 2nd Period was quiet for both teams as the Hawks led in shots 10-7 and Ottawa went 0-3 on the power play. The score remained tied 2-2 until captain Owen Cole scored with a minute and thirty seven seconds left in regulation to give OJS the win and a massive two points in the standings.

Head Coach Martin Dagenais couldn’t stress enough how important Owen Cole is to the team.

“He’s our best player” said Dagenais. “He’s our team captain and there is a reason why we struggled when he was out of the lineup, he is the type of kid that is going to score these big goals and he did just that tonight.”

The Jr. Senators have an entire week off before getting back into action against the Smiths Falls Bears at the Jim Durrell Sports Complex for a 7:40 pm start, Ottawa is ahead of Smiths Falls by two points in the standings but the Bears still have three games in hand.
